What is Yoga?

Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines that helps you in various different ways. As a celebration of international yoga day being yesterday, we wanted to share the experience of one of our young people that loves it to try and motivate you to give it a go!

How to take part?

There are many ways that you can take part in yoga. One way is going to a yoga class in your local area. However, as we are in lockdown, there are many videos online that you can watch. Yet, make sure that you are safe whilst taking part in the activity.

Experience from a yoga participant;

“I’ve been doing yoga for about 3 years now. Yoga has helped me with both my mental and physical health. One is that it has strengthened my lower back and neck as I’ve suffered from pain over the last several years in those areas. Within a short space of time my neck and back felt much better and I now very rarely experience any pain. Since starting yoga, I have been more relaxed and much happier in myself.

With the gym being closed at the moment, I have missed going to my yoga sessions twice a week, however, I am continuing to do some short sessions whilst at home. I’ve been taught some breathing and relaxation techniques which have helped relieve stress. These techniques have especially helped me throughout the lockdown period.

Yoga is good for you whatever age as it involves moving and stretching in ways that help you become more flexible and helps improve muscle strength and tone. I would encourage anyone thinking about doing yoga to have a go!  I’m not that flexible that I can do the splits yet but hoping that one day I will be!”
