Sitting exams is stressful enough but the wait for the results is an extra pressure for thousands of young people across the world. The closer the day gets to getting your results, the more nerves that start to kick in.

Know that your grades really don’t define you! However, know that there are options for you when you don’t receive the results that you want.

What are the options?

Appeal your results

This allows your exam papers to be re-marked and potentially get your marks to go up. Appealing your results will have to be done through your school so speak to your teachers to start this process. However, there is a cost that will be discussed with you and can sometimes be paid by the school.

Retake your exams

If appealing your results doesn’t go your way, there are retakes that take place in the autumn. Again, talk with your school to discuss how to proceed with retaking your exams. This can take a toll on your self-esteem so find the support for you to help you through this time.

  • Apprenticeships or Traineeship
  • Employment
  • Taking some time out

A-levels specific

When it comes to your A-levels you can discuss your options with the university that you favour. Some universities are flexible so you may still have a chance. However, if this is not the case, you can go through clearance, supported by UCAS.

How to support friends when they don’t get the grades they need?

🐼 Be the person that allows them to have a shoulder to cry on

🐨 Take their mind off it by doing something that they enjoy

🐶 Go through the options with them

Exams results aren’t the be all and end all. They are just a stepping stone for the next steps in your life. Some things in life take time and if you need to retake your exams to take those next steps in your life, then that’s ok. Go at your own speed and try not to compare yourself to where other people are in their lives.

If you need support, don’t be afraid to ask. There are many people out there that will be happy to help you get you to your next steps in your life.
