Creating Meaningful Conversations!

It’s National Conversation Day (July 12th)! We want to take this opportunity to highlight what meaningful conversations have on our wellbeing. Today encourages people to talk and connect with each other.

Having conversations, however big or small, opens the door for more meaningful connections and for us to feel more comfortable in being curious. It’s also here to encourage us to feel more comfortable in reaching out for help when we need it.

Conversations don’t have to be lengthy for you to be able to get something out of them. They could be anything from talking to a shop assistant for the first time to talking to family and friends in the comfort of your home.

For many people, having these conversations can be difficult and that is ok. It could be because of low self-esteem or feeling anxious around talking to others. Starting small can be a starting point to having meaningful conversations. For example, asking a fun question.

Ways to have meaningful conversations;

~ Going beyond the basics

Every conversation you have can be meaningful, even if you only ask the simple questions. However, diving deeper can allow you to go even further. It’s going beyond the “how are you?” questions and talking about hobbies and opinions on the world. You may find some common ground with your peers and create friendships from those conversations.

~ Listening

Listening whilst in a conversation enables you to connect and engage with each other better. It shows that you have an interest in what others have to say, the way that you would like others showing interest in what you have to say. It can lead to an understanding on a deeper level.

~ Being comfortable

Having meaningful conversations can come from people feeling comfortable talking with each other. You could be talking about things you have in common or topics that you may disagree on. However, creating an environment where everyone feels safe to share their opinions without feeling judged by others is important.

Meaningful conversations can provide support, stronger relationships, a sense of belonging and so much more. It’s ok if it takes time to create meaningful conversations. They don’t have to be anything extravagant. They can be as small as getting outside your comfort zone by starting up a small conversation with a shop assistant.
