Growing up, I would spend so much time thinking about the way that other people saw me, how they would judge me for the way that I acted or the clothes I wore. Obviously, there are certain situations and contexts where you need to think about these things like when your going to a job interview or in a more formal setting. But you definitely don’t have to be thinking about these things before you leave the house to pick up some milk and eggs from the corner shop.

You CAN overcome your obstacles

There were a series of mirrors that I was faced with before leaving the house in the morning, one in the bathroom, my bedroom, two in the lounge and one right next to my front door. There were the obstacles that I faced every day before leaving the house. I would waste so much time staring into those pieces of glass questioning everything about myself.

It isn’t easy

Transparently, this was something I struggled with for a very long time, it was only until I arrived at my university campus that I started to consider why I was giving so much of my energy to caring about what other people thought of me. I came to realise that as long as I was being thoughtful and respectful to those around me, I shouldn’t change myself or live in a way that doesn’t feel completely authentic.

This was not an easy transition to make in any way, but now I can confidently say that I am more comfortable with myself now than I have ever been before. Now I can wear whatever I want, act in whatever way comes natural to me and not question or regret any choices that I make!

It’s a personal process…

You may be wondering; how can I do this? And like everything, there is not one simple answer or solution. I started by making small changes like putting on the one pair of trousers that I am usually ‘afraid’ of or walking out of the house without criticising every part of myself for 20 minutes. But at the end of the day  this is a very individual process and so taking a few minutes out of your day to give thought to this topic to create space for the change that you want to see!
