Showing Yourself Self-Love 

Self-love; where you give yourself respect, compassion and grace. It’s where you look after yourself and make sure that your wants and needs are met. Giving yourself self-love is a vital part of helping your wellbeing. It helps you build confidence and resilience.  

It can be a hard thing to give yourself self-love, especially when you are going through challenges in life. Finding time to show yourself self-love, not only in challenging times but also in other aspects of your life, is important. It can alleviate some of what is going on and allows you to have some self-belief and confidence within your life.  

Self-love allows you to know that no matter what you are going through, in the end, you will look after yourself, that you give yourself grace and compassion. It can take time and work to learn how to give self-love as sometimes we can be the most critical about ourselves. Here are a few tips on giving yourself self-love;  

Setting aside time for self-care;  

People need time for themselves, to look after their wants and needs and allowing yourself time where you do this, allows you to self-love. It allows you to take care of your body and mind, and it doesn’t have to be anything big or elaborate. It can be something as little as taking a nap or indulging in one of your favorite treats.  

Positive self-talk;  

Sometimes people can be overly critical of themselves but turning those thoughts into something positive is something that is crucial for our wellbeing. It improves self-esteem, confidence, and your overall mood. As well as it being easier to pick yourself up from challenges knowing that you have a strong relationship with yourself.  

Forgiving yourself;  

Going through life can be trial and error. You’ll go through life expecting it to go one way, but it goes in a totally different direction or even mistakes can happen, and at times we may internalize these mistakes or blame ourselves for those outcomes. However, things happen and, in most cases, there’s no one to blame. They can be used as an opportunity to learn and grow. 

Feel your feelings;  

There is nothing wrong with having negative feelings as life isn’t always going to be all sunshine and rainbows. Even though finding happiness and having good mental health is important and where we should strive to be, that isn’t always going to be the case. Allowing yourself to feel these feelings allows you to express, acknowledge and get to the root of challenge. 

In the end, self-love is about giving yourself grace, to allow yourself to feel your feelings without any guilt or judgement from you. It’s about looking after yourself and making sure that no matter what you are happy and remember, you don’t need to go through this alone. Reach out to the people around you to receive the support that you need.
