It’s the final year of primary school, the year where the transition into a new school begins. This transition can be a nerve-wracking experience, and it is normal for your mental health and wellbeing to be affected.
Taking the step between primary and high school is a big change and you may feel that you are not ready for that change. It’s ok to feel unsettled and anxious about moving onto a new adventure and it won’t be the last adventure you’ll have.
Not knowing what will happen next can make you feel like things are out of your control but there are things that can be put in place to make the change go a little more smoothly. Here are some tips and tricks to help with your transition.
Before the school year begins;
- Plan the route you’ll take to school
- Get your school bag ready the night before the school year begins
- Organise to go into school with friends
During the first few weeks;
- Sign up to extracurricular activities
- Be patient with yourself
- Get to know the support networks e.g. the go to teacher you would speak to
- Organise your lessons from the start to keep on track of your work
Each school will have activities and things in place to help you with the transition into high school. The transition will start whilst you are in primary school and will carry on within the first few weeks of high school.
Give yourself grace, it can take some time to get used to the new environment. It’s a new adventure where the unexpected can happen but once you get into the groove, it’ll become your new normal. Make sure that you enjoy yourself but reach out to the people around you if you need help.
